My story
Sarah ellison
is a ceramic artist based in Port Angeles, Washington. She recently relocated to the Olympic Peninsula after spending 12 years in remote Alaska. Her ceramic practice is influenced by her background as a forest ecologist and years of adventuring across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest through fieldwork, backpacking, packrafting, and bicycling.
Working primarily in slab-built functional ware, Sarah creates pieces that echo the textures and forms of the natural world. The weathered grain of a whitebark pine, shaped by wind and snow in the subalpine, becomes the spiraling seam of a coffee mug. The retreat of waves across a tidal flat is reflected in the flowing pattern imprinted on a vase. Slab building allows for the direct incorporation of materials collected during her time outdoors, as well as landscapes she has interacted with, impressing lived experience directly into the clay.
Each piece is designed to engage both hand and eye. Sarah combines raw clay surfaces, carved textures, and layers of satin and gloss glazes to create richly tactile forms. Her work features organic textures and forms that speak to the process of handbuilding. Impressions of her fingers and hands remain in each piece to create a comforting, ergonomic experience that fosters a sense of connection during use.
